My Newfound Freedom

by Courtney Yasmineh

/

about

Courtney Yasmineh is on a mission to make an album about the tragic demise of the family she left behind when she ran away to Northern Minnesota, how they struggled, how they fell, how they died. This song comes from her first revisiting of her old memories in Chicago, her original hometown, in late 2021. With the encouragement of some great musicians there, she embarks on a quest for closure that is deeply personal and unflinching and decidedly not for everyone.

lyrics

I went to the grave sites
I went to the shore
I went to the old church
where I was born
But no one was there
to hear me cry
Nobody listened when I apologized
I guess it don't matter
It's so much later
The world's moved on
My sins mean nothing to them now

Where will I go
with my newfound freedom?
I am frightened
by the lightness of my soul
When you're finally forgiven
you have no weight at all
I guess I'll just let the wind blow me home
I guess I'll just let the wind blow me home
